Anthony Payne is a multi-award winning corporate and financial communications consultant with more than 25 years’ experience of working with clients on strategies for communicating with print, online and broadcast media, employees, investors and analysts.
Originally trained as a lawyer, Anthony worked briefly in asset management at which point he qualified as a General Registered Representative of the London Stock Exchange, before beginning his career in marketing and communications consulting.
From 1990 to 1998 he was based in Asia, first in Hong Kong with Burson-Marsteller as head of their financial communications team, and then in Thailand as country head for Burson-Marsteller’s office there. He also held a global role in B-M’s financial practice.
While in Hong Kong he worked on several IPOs including advising the first mainland Chinese company to list its shares on the New Stock Exchange, Brilliance China Automotive. He first visited China in 1993 as part of his work for Brilliance.
Anthony’s varied marketing communications experience includes advising OM Group on their bid for the London Stock Exchange (this campaign won the award for Best Financial Communications Campaign in 2001); employee communications campaigns for Coca Cola, Kimberly Clark and Colgate Palmolive and integrated marketing communications campaigns for Brevan Howard, Harvest Asset Management, EI Sturdza Asset Management, Wells Fargo Asset Management, Mirae Asset Global Investments, JP Morgan Private Equity, Citibank, Credit Suisse, Chenavari Financial Group, Acadian, Skybridge, Julius Baer and PricewaterhouseCoopers.
He is acknowledged as an expert in providing messaging and branding to asset management firms, and as a crisis communications specialist.
Anthony’s crisis and issues management experience includes negative media targeting, legal disputes, bankruptcy, noxious escapes including oil spills, food poisoning, infectious diseases, product recall, campaigns from activist groups, sabotage, product tampering, extortion, site closures, downsizing, difficult corporate restructurings, high profile financial issues management and mergers and acquisitions.
Prior to founding Peregrine in 2003, Anthony was Managing Director, and Director, Europe, Middle East and Africa Financial Practice of WPP owned Hill & Knowlton Financial, a global financial communications firm.
He has also held senior consultancy and board positions with global firms Burson-Marsteller, where he achieved managing director level, and with Shandwick, where he was a board director.
Anthony has an honours degree in Law, was trained as a solicitor, is qualified as a General Registered Representative of the London Stock Exchange, and is a Member of the Chartered Institute of Public Relations.
Anthony is listed in PR Week’s 2020 Powerbook and was recognised for his Outstanding Contribution to Marketing Communications for the hedge fund industry in 2019 Hedge Fund Journal awards.
Anthony is also Chairman of leading lifestyle digital marketing communications firm, Gerber Communications.
